We Belong To One Another (((HOMILY))): 23rd Sunday In Ordinary Time

by Father Brian J. Soliven on Sunday September 6, 2020

Why does God love you? Have you ever asked yourself that question? It's an awkward, strange one. Let me ask you something more earthly: Why do you love your wife? Your husband? Why do you love your children? Someone might respond, "Just because... nature, evolution." If that's the case, we've just reduced love to mere brain activity. We intuitive know that love is more than the amount of dopamine and oxytocin in our neural synapses. There is something more at work when St. Paul repeats the words of Jesus' Greatest Commandment in this Sunday's Second Reading: "any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'" (Romans 13: 8-10)
